Nexcom – Bulgaria has launched the first commercial WiMAX services
25 January 2007
NEXCOM is the first telecom company in Bulgaria to start commercial WiMAX services - wireless broadband internet, telephony, leased lines, MAN and VPN solutions within cities, and between them.  The services are available in Sofia and Sofia region, Bansko, Bourgas, Bania, Razlog, Dobrinishte, Nessebar, Sunny Beach, Sveti Vlas. The first clients of WiMAX are big and medium businesses and company’s present customers, upgraded to WiMAX.

The new services are offered separately or as an integrated solution depending on clients’ preferences.
“The good news is that WiMAX is not just a promise for high-speed wireless voice, data and video transfer. WiMAX is already a reality in Bulgaria”, said Emil Nikolov, CEO of NEXCOM Bulgaria. “We are proud not only to be the first company to offer WiMAX service in many towns in Bulgaria, but to be a pioneer in market liberalization, providing  the first real alternative to the incumbent operator.  We are excited with the huge potential of WIMAX and we plan to quickly expand in more than 30 cities in 2007 covering all towns and villages in Bulgaria with population of over 50 000 people. The next cities where we will offer services are Plovidv, Rousse, Varna, Stara Zagora, Pleven and the big seaside and mountain resorts”, said Mr Emil Nikolov.

NEXCOM has chosen Alvarion as a supplier of its WiMAX equipment - the global leader on the WiMAX equipment market having the largest number of built WiMAX networks in the world. The WiMAX services of NEXCOM are offered on the basis of the product series BreezeMAX of Alvarion.

The network of NEXCOM is built over equipment certified by the WiMAX Forum, the organization whose member is NEXCOM.  The planned investments for the next several years amount to over 20 million euro. After transferring the traffic to its own data transfer network  in seven big Bulgarian cities – Sofia, Plovdiv, Stara Zagora, Sliven, Varna, Bourgas and Veliko Turnovo, NEXCOM became independent of other operators’ infrastructure and got last-mile access to end-users by own network. That enables the company to be the first that offers a complete replacement of the services given by the incumbent operator – high-speed internet and telephony.
The users of WiMAX receive wireless internet with speed up to 10 Mbps and a telephone line with a number from the numbering plan of NEXCOM. The services are easily used and their quality is guaranteed through constant monitoring and support by the Network Operations Centre of NEXCOM. The broadband internet and telephony allow intuitive usage and are accessible for every user.
NEXCOM also offers a wide range of services for data transfer to corporate clients. These services are urban and interurban connectivity, MAN and VPN solutions. WiMAX is a technology which allows deployment in very short term, large coverage in urban and suburban areas, especially in those areas where, under normal circumstances, the distance and terrain might otherwise pose a problem.  As opposed to DSL, WiMAX allows symmetric connection, equal access to local and international internet and separate channels for voice and data.

WiMAX networks are going to be the basis for the 4G networks. NEXCOM’s network is designed to allow easy and transparent upgrade of clients to mobile WiMAX (802.16e).
Currently the mobile WiMAX standard is being tested and we expect its certification by WiMAX Forum to happen in several months. NEXCOM is going to be among the first to offer mobile WiMAX services. According to WiMAX Forum (www.wimaxforum.com) mobile WiMAX will be set in production in 2008 when the simultaneous usage of telephone and internet on the fly will be possible through embedded chipsets in mobile devices (such as PDA, notebooks, mobile phones).  An important aspect for mobile WiMAX penetration is the availability of subscriber devices at reasonable prices on the market.  NEXCOM aims at building a dense and high-grade WiMAX coverage within the whole country and targets supply of fixed and mobile services to all business and private customers in the short-run.

NEXCOM Bulgaria LLC was established in 1998 and is fully owned by the USA telco NEXCOM Telecommunications LLC. NEXCOM Bulgaria was the first company in Bulgaria to offer services based on VoIP technology. Currently NEXCOM has a national network in 28 cities and 19 offices in the country. NEXCOM possesses licenses for fixed telephony, carrier selection, data transfer, voice services offered by public phone booths and for the wireless technology Point to Multipoint.
